How to Deboss on Paper with Your Cricut
Step 1: Create a new project on Cricut Design Space. Download the tiger vector file below and upload it onto the canvas.
PS. Feel free to make use of the Cricut software’s built in text and shape features as well as the pre-made templates if you’d like to customize your own designs to deboss!
Step 2: Install the Fine Point Blade on your Cricut Machine. For this project, use either the Cricut Maker or Maker 3.
Step 3: Select the tiger file and resize it to your liking then choose the operation “basic cut”.
Step 4: Pick your paper and attach it to a Cricut Light or Standard Grip Mat. You can use a brayer to help flatten your material better.
Step 5: On your machine, click “make it” and you’d be prompted to the materials and blade settings screen.
Step 6: Under the “materials” tab, choose the appropriate paper setting. In our case, we used “Heavy Cardstock – 100 lb”. Depending on the thickness of your material, you may have to adjust the pressure and passes. Remember to test first so you don’t waste your materials!
Step 7: Click the “Go” button on your machine and let it cut for you.
Step 8: When the cut is complete, unload the mat and weed out the design. You can do this with your hands or if available, a Cricut Weeder. Only remove the areas that are not part of your design. Leave your cutout design on the mat. This will help make our debossed design pop up better.
Step 9: Get your paper and place it on top of the one we cut earlier. Again, use a brayer to make sure that the material is flat and secure. You may likewise add some washi or masking tape on the sides of the paper to really hold it in place.
Step 10: Go back to your canvas and select the tiger vector again. This time, choose the operation “deboss”.
Step 11 : Replace your Fine Point Blade with the Debossing Tool.
Step 12: Load your mat onto your machine.
Step 13: On your machine, click “make it” and you’d be prompted again to the materials settings tab. Choose “Heavy Cardstock – 100 lb” like before then press “Go” on your machine.
Step 14: Once finished, unload your mat and weed out your project to reveal the design!
Tip: You can totally skip steps 1 to 9 and go straight to debossing. It works just fine! But this is a hack that we found that works when you want a more depressed detail on the material. You are also free to add pressure or play with the settings to find the perfect combination that works for you.
